Snorkeling for the First Time in Cabo San Lucas
Coming into Cabo San Lucas felt like gliding into a postcard. The water shimmered in every shade of blue, small boats zipped around us like water bugs, and those iconic rock formations—jagged, dramatic, and rising straight out of the sea—welcomed us as if they’d been waiting. With only eight hours on shore, we were determined to make the most of it. And what better way than trying snorkeling for the very first time?
Stepping off the cruise ship onto the dock, we wandered along the promenade, soaking in the energy. Shops lined the walkway, bursting with colorful souvenirs, beachwear, and trinkets clearly aimed at tourists—but in a charming way. It was fun just people‑watching: families bargaining, couples strolling hand‑in‑hand, and locals chatting with each other between customers. What surprised us most was how friendly and relaxed the vendors were. No pushy sales tactics, no pressure—just genuine warmth.
We had already booked a snorkeling adventure through Expedia after comparing reviews and prices. It was literally half the cost of the cruise ship’s excursion, and since the marina was so close, we weren’t worried about missing our return time. The only challenge? Finding the right booth. There were so many stands offering the same activities that it felt like a maze of identical signs and smiling faces. But every time a vendor approached us and we explained we already had a tour booked, they didn’t brush us off—they actually helped us look for the right company. Everyone seemed to know each other by name, like friendly competitors in a small community.
Eventually, we found our guide. Since we were early, they encouraged us to explore and come back in an hour. That small reassurance—knowing exactly where to return—made the rest of our wandering feel carefree.
We continued browsing the busy shops until nature called. We quickly learned that most public restrooms charged a fee. Thankfully, we stumbled into the tourist information center, which not only had great local tips but also clean, free restrooms. A small victory, but a welcome one.
When it was finally time to meet our guide, we boarded the boat and headed out. The first half of the ride was a scenic tour of Cabo’s most famous landmarks, including the legendary Arch of Cabo San Lucas—El Arco. Our guide shared the stories behind the beaches tucked between the rocks:
Lover’s Beach faces the calm Sea of Cortez, making it ideal for swimming and relaxing.
Divorce Beach, on the opposite side, faces the Pacific Ocean, where the waves are rough and unpredictable. The names are a playful nod to their contrasting personalities—one gentle, one wild.
The Arch itself has been shaped over thousands of years by wind and waves. It’s the meeting point of two seas and one of the most photographed spots in all of Mexico. Seeing it up close felt surreal.
Then came the moment we’d been waiting for: snorkeling time.
The boat anchored near a roped‑off area designated for swimmers and snorkelers. No boats allowed inside—just clear, inviting water. We slipped in, and instantly the world transformed. The water was warm and pleasant, sunlight danced across the surface, and schools of colorful fish darted around us like living confetti. We spotted divers below, a few patches of coral, and more fish than we could count. For our first snorkeling experience, it felt magical.
We spent about 45 minutes in the water, though it felt like five. The guide snapped underwater photos of us and offered digital copies for $45—a bit of a splurge, but honestly, the memories were worth it.
Snorkeling tours in Cabo are incredibly popular, and for good reason. Most tours—like the one we booked through Expedia—include gear, a guided boat ride, and time at one or two snorkeling spots. Some even bundle in visits to the Arch, Lover’s Beach, or glass‑bottom boat rides. With calm waters and abundant marine life, Cabo is one of the easiest and most beginner‑friendly places to try snorkeling.
We climbed back onto the boat sun‑kissed, salty, and absolutely thrilled. For two people who had never snorkeled before, this little adventure opened a whole new world. And now? Well… let’s just say the Great Barrier Reef in Sydney has officially made its way onto our future‑dreams list.
One small taste of underwater wonder, and we’re hooked.
