🍹 Rainy Day Stops in Roatán: The Rum Factory Experience

After our sweet detour to the Roatan Chocolate Factory, our next stop on this rainy island day was the Roatan Rum Company—a well-known tourist favorite perched on the hillside above West Bay.

We don’t drink, but the experience was still enjoyable thanks to the rum-infused baked goods and the free taste testing that greeted us upon arrival. From rum cakes to cookies and sauces, there was an impressive array of flavors to try—many of which surprised us with their richness and creativity. Our favorites were definitely the rum-soaked pastries, perfect for nibbling while waiting out the rain.

🥃 About the Roatan Rum Company

Founded to highlight the island’s love for handcrafted goods, the Roatan Rum Company offers small-batch rum and a line of gourmet rum cakes and sauces made right on the island. While their spiced and flavored rums (like coconut, mango, and cinnamon) are a big draw for visitors, it’s the free tasting experience—of both food and drink—that steals the show. You can even custom bottle your own rum with a personalized label (a great gift or souvenir for rum lovers!).

💲 Tourist Pricing & The Island Economy

One thing we noticed (and weren’t too excited about) was that the prices—both at the chocolate and rum factories—were very similar to American prices. While we understand that Roatán’s economy is heavily reliant on tourism, it still felt a bit off when you're hoping for a more local or authentic experience. That said, both places were clean, well-run, and clearly designed to appeal to cruise guests and vacationers.

🌧️ A Cloudy View and a Thoughtful Guide

We stepped out onto the back deck of the rum shop, and even though the skies were gray and the ocean was veiled in mist, the view was still breathtaking. On a sunny day, it must be spectacular. The location is definitely chosen for the photo-op!

Our tour guide—on his first day on the job—was trying his best to think of indoor places to take us while the storm passed. He was incredibly polite and helpful, even admitting he’d never been to the rum or chocolate factory before. It really drove home that many of these stops are set up specifically for tourists. But still, it was a unique way to get a literal taste of the island.

🧁 Final Thoughts

While the Roatan Rum Company wasn’t a major highlight for us, it was still a fun, quick stop—especially for those who enjoy sampling local spirits or sweet treats. If you’re not a drinker, the baked goods and the views alone might be enough to make it worth your while.

And for rum fans? We imagine this place would feel like a treasure trove.
