Exploring New Orleans: Safety, Surprises, and Spooky Tales
If you’ve been following along, you might remember us asking around and blogging about safety in New Orleans before our trip. We weren’t quite sure what to expect, especially at night, so we decided to drive around in the rental car the city during the day to get a feel for the different neighborhoods. And you know what? It was actually quite nice!

Daytime Exploring & First Impressions
As we made our way through the city, we didn’t see too much that made us feel uneasy. The only places where we noticed homeless encampments were near a bus stop and the public library by Tulane Medical School. Other than that, the city seemed lively, charming, and full of character.
A Bourbon Street Stroll... Before Dark?
We thought we’d beat the crowds by taking a quick walk down Bourbon Street before sunset. You know, just to see what the vibe was like before people got too drunk. Big mistake. 🤣
At 5 PM, the party was already in full swing! The streets were packed, and it felt like a “drunk by association” kind of walk. To top it off, it was formal weekend, so all the college students and frat guys were dressed to impress and had clearly been partying all day long.
After a short but entertaining walk, we decided to head back to our hotel, refresh, and get ready for dinner. At this point, we felt much more comfortable walking around at night, but we still took some precautions—we carried pepper spray, only brought a couple of cards, and carried minimal cash.
An Unexpected Parade! 🎺🎷
Just when we thought the night was winding down, we stumbled into a parade! Complete with a police escort, a live band, and a stream of college students marching down the street in all their glory. Talk about a true New Orleans experience!
Ghost Tours & Cemetery Strolls 👻
While walking around, we kept bumping into ghost tours. We lingered around a few groups to listen in, and wow—they sounded SO fun! We really wish we had signed up for one because New Orleans is full of murder mysteries, eerie tales, and bizarre stories.
We also visited one of the famous cemeteries during the day, and honestly? We can only imagine how eerie it would be at night with the fog rolling in. If you’re into spooky history, this city is definitely the place to be.
Final Thoughts
New Orleans is an amazing place for a good time, but it’s not somewhere we’d bring little ones. The city is full of energy, history, and unexpected surprises, and we’re so glad we got to experience a little bit of everything—from wild Bourbon Street to eerie ghost stories.
