Exploring New Orleans’ Central Business District Before Our Cruise

Whenever we plan a cruise, we always arrive at least one day early—it’s the golden rule for avoiding travel-induced stress! For our upcoming Caribbean cruise from New Orleans, we’ve taken it a step further by arriving two nights early. Our first night is just a pit stop to rest, but our second day? It’s all about immersing ourselves in the magic of the Crescent City.

We’ve been researching New Orleans neighborhoods to decide where to stay, and today we’re diving into the Central Business District (CBD)—a neighborhood that promises a mix of convenience, charm, and sophistication.

Why the Central Business District Caught Our Eye

The CBD is the professional hub of New Orleans, located just a stone’s throw from the bustling French Quarter. Unlike the Quarter’s nonstop energy, the CBD offers a more subdued, business-like vibe—perfect if you want to be close to the action but not right in the middle of it.

What We Love About the CBD:

  • Prime Location: Walking distance to both the French Quarter and the Garden District, with the Canal Street streetcar line running through.
  • Upscale Accommodations: Some of the nicest hotels in New Orleans are here, making it an excellent choice for a comfortable stay.
  • Dining and Entertainment: From trendy restaurants in the South Market District to restored theaters like the Saenger and Orpheum, the CBD has plenty to keep us entertained.
  • Parking Perks: Easier parking compared to the French Quarter—a bonus if we decide to rent a car.

Potential Drawbacks:

  • Business-Like Vibe: It’s more professional than festive, which could feel less “New Orleans” to some.
  • Moderate Crime Rate: Like any urban area, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings.

Our Game Plan for Exploring the CBD

We’re starting the day with breakfast at a local café, followed by a leisurely stroll through the South Market District, where we’ll check out the trendy shops and maybe sample some baked treats from an award-winning bakery.

Next, we’re heading to the Saenger Theatre for a quick peek at its beautifully restored interior. If time allows, we might even catch a matinee or live performance.

For lunch, the CBD has no shortage of options, and we’re eyeing a meal at Bésame—a spot known for its inventive dishes and stylish ambiance.

The afternoon will be spent exploring the area’s historic architecture and soaking in the view of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome (an iconic landmark in its own right).

Should We Stay in the CBD?

The CBD feels like a balanced option: close enough to the lively French Quarter for spontaneous adventures, yet quiet enough to recharge after a day of exploring. It’s sophisticated, convenient, and offers a touch of modern urbanity in a city steeped in history.

But will it win out over neighborhoods like the French Quarter, Marigny, or the Garden District? That’s the million-dollar question, and we’re determined to spend our day exploring to find the answer.

Have you stayed in the CBD before? Let us know your favorite spots or hidden gems—we’re always looking for tips!

Until next time.
