🌴 West End Roatán: Dreaming of Sunshine in Paradise

After our stops at the chocolate and rum factories, our Roatán tour continued with a visit to West End—a charming, vibrant part of the island that had us dreaming of better weather.

Even in the midst of a tropical storm, we could see the potential of this gorgeous spot. Palm trees swayed dramatically in the wind, the boats bobbed in the rough Caribbean waters, and though the skies were gray, the energy of the area was unmistakable.

We couldn’t help but imagine how incredible it would’ve been on a sunny day—especially if our much-anticipated submarine tour had gone as planned. We were so excited to explore under the sea, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Still, the West End gave us a taste of what this island is all about.

🌊 About Roatán

Roatán is the largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras, located about 65 kilometers off the northern coast of the mainland. Roughly 59 kilometers long and less than 8 kilometers wide, Roatán is nestled between the islands of Utila and Guanaja. The island is divided into two municipalities:

  • JosĂ© Santos Guardiola (east side)

  • Roatán (west side, including Cayos Cochinos)

Once known as Ruatan or Rattan, this island has grown into a top Caribbean destination for snorkeling, diving, and eco-adventures. And after even a brief visit, we totally get why.

🏝️ West End: The Laid-Back Heart of Roatán

The West End is one of the most popular and walkable areas of Roatán. It’s packed with local shops, cafĂ©s, dive centers, and beachfront restaurants—many with views you’d expect straight out of a travel magazine (if only the sun had joined us!). Even in the rain, we could see how lively and welcoming it is. And after checking out what we could have done... we’re already thinking of coming back.

Here are just some of the things to do in the West End on a sunny day:

  • Snorkeling & Diving Tours in the world’s second-largest barrier reef

  • Clear kayak and paddleboard rentals

  • Sunset catamaran cruises

  • Beachfront massages and spa experiences

  • Visiting Gumbalimba Park for wildlife encounters

  • Ziplining, ATV adventures, or even parasailing!

  • Eating fresh seafood while your feet are in the sand

🤿 Next Time, We Dive

Roatán is clearly a place you could easily spend several days soaking in the natural beauty, marine adventures, and relaxed beach town charm. Even though our day here was cut short and clouded by storms, we felt the magic through the raindrops.

West End showed us just enough to leave us wanting more. Next time we’re in this part of the Caribbean, we’re crossing our fingers for sunshine, snorkeling, and submarine rides. Roatán, you’re officially on our "must return" list.
