The Great Travel Dilemma: To Plan or Not to Plan?

Ah, the age-old travel dilemma—a question that plagues every explorer at one point or another: To plan every detail meticulously or to simply let the wind carry you where it may? For The Trekking Pawns, this debate is an ever-present companion on our adventures.

Allow us to paint you a picture: I'm the designated planner, and my trusty counterpart happily follows along. As we embark on our journeys, I grapple with the eternal question of how much to plan. Some trips see me crafting day-to-day itineraries down to the hour—meticulously calculating opening times, crowd projections, and restaurant reviews. This level of planning ensures that we make the most of every precious moment, ticking off all the must-sees efficiently.

But here's the twist: travel, much like life, is inherently unpredictable. Unexpected roadblocks like transportation hiccups, closures, or serendipitous discoveries can throw my carefully crafted schedules into disarray. Worse yet, there's the internal debate when we stumble upon something unexpected and exciting. Do we abandon the plan or stick to our meticulously plotted course?

Then, there's the flip side—the daring adventurers who plunge into the great unknown without a blueprint. They bask in the freedom of spontaneity, savoring the thrill of discovery. Yet, they occasionally suffer from FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), only later to realize that they were a stone's throw away from a hidden gem.

Now, add a new layer to this dilemma: social media. In the age of Instagram and Facebook, we're bombarded with stunning visuals of far-off destinations, capturing every picturesque detail. These images tantalize the imagination, setting the bar high for our own experiences. My travel partner recently stumbled upon a captivating reel of London during its Christmas winter wonderland—a scene so enchanting it left him awestruck. However, it also sparked a thought: "What if the reality doesn't live up to the image?"

Is social media robbing travel of its raw, unscripted magic, replacing it with expectations that might go unmet? Is it turning our adventures into movie-versus-book scenarios, where the imagination reigns supreme? After all, the 'Gram isn't always an accurate reflection of reality.

So, dear fellow travelers, where do we find the balance in this age of information overload? Should we plan every step, reveling in the thrill of accomplishment, or throw caution to the wind and welcome the serendipity of the unknown? Is social media a double-edged sword, a source of inspiration and aspiration, but also a potential spoiler of the travel mystique?

As we embark on our upcoming London adventure, and possibly a spontaneous hop to Ireland, these questions linger. Our conclusion? There's no one-size-fits-all answer. It's about finding your own travel rhythm—a harmonious blend of planning and spontaneity. So, whether you're a meticulous planner or a carefree wanderer, let's toast to the joy of travel in all its unpredictability, Instagram moments and all!

  1. I prefer the slower pace to give time to visit and walk around. It gives time for discovery and surprises!

  2. Travel the European way! My family would spend 2-3 weeks in one place during our holidays. The American way is to spend 1-2 days in each place and it feels so rushed. Relax and enjoy life.
